Kayla Jeffers

Richland Northeast High School, Columbia, SC

Hi! I am Kayla Jeffers. I was born and raised in Columbia, SC. I have a younger brother, Alex, and my parents are Troy and Margot Jeffers. I have lived a pretty simple life. People would describe me as caring, hardworking, creative, and a naturalista because of my natural hair

I was involved in ballet starting from the age of 5 until the age of 10. I started playing volleyball when I was 12, and I have enjoyed playing ever since. I am a rising senior at Richland Northeast High School, where l am involved in various activities.  I am a part of the Varsity volleyball team, two magnet programs (Convergence Media and Palmetto Center of the Arts-Orchestra), the National Honors Society,  and HOSA. I balance these activities while taking Honors classes.  Outside of school,  I was a member of SC Midlands club volleyball for five years. I also participate in community service with other organizations.
I have always had a passion for videography and photography. The Convergence Media program at my school has helped me advance my skills in these areas. After graduating high school, I would like to major in Communications. My goal is to get accepted to Elon University or the University of South Carolina and hopefully incorporate the skills I learned in Convergence Media into my future profession.

Cora Stone

Lexington High School, Lexington SC

Hi! My name is Cora Stone and I am a rising senior at Lexington High School in Lexington, South Carolina.

Since becoming a member of my yearbook staff at school in 2015, I have developed a passion for communicating with people and sharing their stories. I am currently the Copy Editor for the Cat’s Paw Yearbook Staff and am responsible for ensuring that all stories, quotes and captions maintain AP Style and contain interesting and valid content. I plan to grow in the field of communications and reporting by studying journalism in college.
I was born in Hartford, CT and have lived in Germantown, MD, Fairfax, VA, Overland Park, KS and moved to Lexington, SC when I was nine years old. I have a two brothers (16 and 10), a sister (9) and two dogs. I love to travel and especially love New England and the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. At school, I am involved in the Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society, Spanish Club and Teenage Republicans Club. Running is also a hobby of mine, and I enjoy being a captain of my track and cross country teams.
Along with school activities, I also care deeply about my community. I am a very active member at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and spend most Sundays and Wednesdays working on the production team. I recently traveled to the Dominican Republic on a mission trip and plan to return in August to work with Haitian refugees. One reason journalism is an interest of mine is the freedom and democracy it promotes. By interning at Congressman Joe Wilson’s office, I gained a deeper understanding of the role of the press in government and the protection of people’s rights.
Through the Investigative Journalism Program, I experienced hands-on learning in the field of journalism and am very thankful to have been part of this team.

Kevin Moreno

G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School, Miami, FL

Hello! My name is Kevin Moreno, and I currently reside in Miami, FL. Because I have attained the majority of 24 credits needed for high school graduation, I will be graduating early and will become a rising senior this coming school year. I am an active participant in my school’s marching band and color guard, also known as the Braddock Blue Regiment, in which I spin weapon. I am an active member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the Future Business Leaders of America, and the Quill and Scroll Journalism Honor Society.

I am one of the editors-in-chief of Entheos, the yearbook publication at G. Holmes Braddock. Being an avid reader, writer, and a lover of the English language, my passion for journalism builds up with each passing day. Asking questions about the unknown, giving a voice to those who are voiceless, and shedding light on the world’s most controversial issues today are what inspire me and push me to pursue a career in journalism, hopefully teaching to high school students and at the collegiate level.  I plan to study English Education with a minor in journalism, or the reverse. My goal is to get accepted into the following institutions of higher learning: the University of South Carolina, the University of Central Florida, or Florida International University. No matter where I go after high school ends, being a Pre-Collegiate Fellow has prepared me for the school year ahead and has prepared me for the independence, rigor, and enjoyment of college.

Isabella Gonzalez

Isabella Gonzalez

Clarke Central High School, Athens, GA

Hey there! I’m Isabella Gonzalez. I was born in Thomasville, GA, but was raised in Athens, GA. I have 2 pet cats, but sadly no siblings. My parents are Leslie Gonzalez and Claude Gonzalez, and they are both educators. Some things I enjoy are playing soccer and running cross country, drawing, playing my guitar, and listening to music. My favorite type of music to listen to is Classic Punk, but I really enjoy all types of music too. Music is definitely my passion, but so is journalism. I’ve always enjoyed writing whether it be a short story or an investigative article or thesis. My friends say I am intuitive, creative, and determined although I would describe myself as incredibly socially awkward and goofy. I going to be a freshman at Clarke Central High School this coming school year. I will be joining the Odyssey News team and I look forward to all the new opportunities I will get to pursue journalism through the Odyssey. Once I graduate from High School, I would like to major in Epidemiology, Journalism, or Political Science. For college, I would really like to attend the University of Georgia or Georgia Tech. Since I have a love for writing, I would really like to incorporate my interest in journalism into my college major and future jobs.

Hannah Shimmel

Richland Northeast High School, Columbia, SC

Welcome to the team page!

My name is Hannah Shimmel, and I am currently a rising junior at Richland Northeast High School. I was born in Kannapolis, NC, to Steven and Ramona Shimmel. I have an older brother an an older sister.

I have a passion for literature, and am involved in my school’s book club. I will also be a member of Junior House and mock trial beginning this coming school year.

At Richland Northeast, I am a part of three magnet programs, Horizon (an academic magnet), Palmetto Center for the Arts, and Convergence Media. I will be starting my first year of the IB Diploma program next year and hope to be successful enough in the program to make it to John Hopkins University to study medicine, science, and the humanities and media studies, and then go on to  medical school. I aspire to be a pediatrician and write for a medical journal.

The Convergence Media program has really helped to expand my knowledge of journalism and give me more experience in the field. I am a writer for The Cavalier, which is Richland Northeast’s school newspaper, and I was able to definitively decide that it’s something I want to incorporate in my life goals.

I love writing and am so happy to have contributed to this website.
